Tomb of Nader Shah, Bagh Meli, and several other historical sites also serve millions of tourists every year. Among all the historical and touristic spots, Kohhsangi Park is a well-known and popular destination among both local and international tourists. What do we know about Koohsangi Park and why is it so popular?

The popular and historical Koohsangi Park
Koohsangi Park is known as the second biggest park of Mashhad and is mostly considered as a touristic and scientific center of the city. This park is constructed on the southwest parts of Mashhad in a street named after the park, itself (Koohsangi street).  Koohsangi in Persian means a Stone Mountain and this park is established between two rather tall climaxes of Mount Binalud.  That is the reason behind the name of this park as Koohsangi. On top of this climaxes beautiful scenery of the city and Imam Reza Holy Shrine is visible. The beautiful and magical sunset which is visible from the top of this park is also counted as one of the most popular touristic attractions of Koohsangi Park. The combination of stones, water, and green plants provide a beautiful scenery which along with the nice weather of this park, due to its location, provides a great relaxing atmosphere for its visitors. Through the years, keeping the natural beauty of this park has always been the priority and few artificial constructions have been added to this park.
According to recent studies, Koohsangi Park is the third most popular touristic destinations of Mahshad, after Imam Reza Holy Shrine and Tomb of Ferdowsi. In order to facilitate visitors, several developing projects have been undergone in Koohsangi Park in recent years. Developing projects of this park are mostly focused on dividing the park to smaller sections, in order to ease the visit for interested tourists. Different sections in Koohsasngi park in this regard have been developed which are consist of: a garden of tombs, the garden of sport, the garden of stones, natural garden, and the common garden. An artificial lake with an artificial island of birds along with a natural garden museum are  also further projects which will take place in Koohsangi Park in near future.

Among different buildings in Koohsangi Park, the main building of Khorasan’s main museum adds to the beauty of this park. This building has been designed and constructed under the influence of the unique design of Kalat-e Naderi. Since Mashhad used to be the capital city of Afshari dynasty, all the stones which have been used for the building of the tomb of Nader Shah, have been chosen among high-quality granite stones which are mostly extracted from mountains in Koohsangi area.

The historical importance of Koohsangi Park
In 1588 Shah Abbas the Great placed on the throne by Morshed Gholi Ostajloo in a place where is known as Koohsangi Park today. Shah Abbas was the 5th king of Safavid dynasty and the strongest ruler of this empire. This ceremony was held on the hillside of one of the mountains of the area which is now known as the balcony of Koohsangi. Seven Tombs of important people of their own times, including Sheikh Asad-Allah Yazdi and Mirza Razavi, are placed in this park. Mirza Razavi was a well-known figure during Safavid dynasty whose tomb is a popular spot in the park.  The Qashani art features used for decoration in the tomb of Mirza Razavi attracts many of park’s visitors.  Koohsangi Park is one of a few places where Naser al-Din Shah Qajar visited during his trip to Mashhad in 1905.

Until 1931, Koohsangi Park kept its original shape as a park with natural attractions such as mountains and green gardens. Nice weather and beautiful scenery due to the presence of natural rivers, added to the value of this beautiful park. However, in 1931 the very first phase of constructions started in this park, namely the construction of the pool, a two-floor building and flower framing which took place under the supervision of German experts. These initial developments transformed the original shape of Koohsangi Park to a rather more modern touristic park. During the same time, Milan municipality gifted two human sculptures to Koohsangi Park which was removed after the Iranian revolution.
During 1961, and along with significant developments in Mashhad, a wide street connected Koohsangi Park to the main parts of the city. This street is named after the park itself, Koohsangi Street, and connects to the Mahshad’s main train station. For many years after, Koohsangi street was known as one of the best and the most beautiful streets of Iran.
