Ministry of Interior

Overview of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) of Iran

The Ministry of Interior (وزارت کشور) is one of Iran’s key government institutions, operating since 1901 and headquartered in Toopkhaneh, Tehran. It oversees critical domestic functions—from elections and policing to urban management and crisis response.

🛠️ Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Ministry’s mandate covers a wide span of public administration:

Internal security & public order: Coordinates law enforcement bodies, ensures national order, and protects borders .

Police oversight: Supervises branches such as traffic police, anti-narcotics, immigration/passport, cybercrime units, and border guards under the Law Enforcement Force (FARAJA) .

Elections & political participation: Organizes national and local elections, and oversees the registration and operation of political parties and civic organizations .

Urban and rural governance: Supervises municipalities and village administrations via the Municipalities and Village Administrations Organization, driving regional development and urban planning

Crisis and disaster management: Manages natural disasters, emergencies, and coordinates preventive measures nationwide .

Migration & identity affairs: Handles immigration policies, foreign national affairs, population registration, and biometric identification

Provincial administration: Guides and supervises governors-general, county governors, and rural district managers to implement central policies .

👤 Current Minister: Eskandar Momeni (اسکندر مؤمنی)

Since 21 August 2024, Brigadier-General Eskandar Momeni has served as Minister of Interior in President Masoud Pezeshkian’s cabinet .

Momeni brings a policing and military background—previously commanding Iran’s traffic police, leading the anti-narcotics taskforce, and holding senior roles within the Law Enforcement Command (FARAJA) . During his parliamentary confirmation, he pledged to promote social participation, gender equality, and public freedoms within constitutional limits

Notably, under his leadership, MoI has advanced plans to fortify borders with walls and radar systems to combat smuggling and improve national security coordination with neighboring countries like Iraq

In June 2025, Momeni hosted the ECO Secretary General to discuss regional cooperation on migration, anti-corruption, drug control, and cross-border training initiatives
